And the Turner Prize goes to... a sound...

Last night saw the announcement for The Turner Prize 2010 go to Susan Phillipsz, who won the prestigious if not hopefully controversial prize, to the value of £25,000. The notoriety i am sure is worth substantially more. Phillpsz piece was a sound installation, a piece of her singing a cappella a version of a hauntingly saddening scottish song. Originally exhibited in the streets of Glasgow, now installed in the esteemed walls of the Tate. I'm not entirely sure what J.M.W Turner himself would have made of his namesake credit but...

The winner was announced by Miuccia Prada at The Tate Britain, amongst loud protests by students of cuts in arts funding and education. It was no doubt a successful protest and i would be very surprised if any body on the evening would have been hindered by a quite rightly 'nuisance'. I could certainly hear in the background of the news it was a determined but apt one and i would hope that that feeling was unamious and universal throughout the Tate Britain last night amoung the elite in the industry. Miuccia Prada looked the part of the renouned fashion designer with eccentric and humorous, what i believe were; 'banana' earrings and the telltale iconic blue of the brand. (the girl and fashionartor in me couldn't resist to take note of her) And Muiccia herself was certainly not dismayed by background protesting during her introduction and winning Phillipsz credited the protesters in her speech in support for the cause.

Personally, i had hoped for Spanish born artist Angela de la Cruz to sweep the prize as from reviewing her work and her many recent interviews, i found her paintings and sculptures incredibly poignant, genuine and hard hitting to the point of raw reality. I feel she has a voice and something noteworthy to say or portray within the art world, one that we all should hear loud and clear, if not just Phillips sound recording...
